iPlayer/Flash on Ubuntu Hardy Heron

A few days ago I mentioned that I was having problems with playing BBC iPlayer programs on my Asus Eee. I was also having problems with _some_ other Flash content – though not all.

Turns out that I’d installed the wrong version of the Flash plugin – actually I’d installed more than one and the conflicts were creating the same problems as if the plugins hadn’t been installed at all. However the instructions in the forum posting fixed me up.

  1. [...] Another unresolved issue I have is that I can’t seem to view any BBC iPlayer programmes. Flash appears to be installed fine and works for other sites, but when I try to play any programmes I just get the message “Something went wrong. There seems to be a problem playing this video. Please try again. undefined” But I haven’t yet figured out where this problem is. [Update, I now have this resolved] [...]

Could you tell me how you fixed this please as I appear to have the same issue.

    Thanks

    Hi Pete,
I removed the existing flash plugins ( all 3 of them!) that I’d got installed:

    sudo apt-get remove swfdec-mozilla
    sudo apt-get remove mozilla-plugin-gnash
    sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree

then reinstalled the Flash plugin nonfree with:

    sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Then restart firefox (Assuming it’s already running). that seemed to do the trick for me ;-)
    HTH,

    Thanks for this info. Alex
My iPlayer now works as I too had too many Flash players installed.
I opened synaptic and removed the 2 flash plugins.

    Hi Alex,
I’ve just been trying to sort out an Ubuntu installation on a new (2nd hand) computer and was having a problem with this same issue, and searched google and second on the list was your fix (which I tried and it worked). Its a small world. Hope things are good with you and its all going well.
    Matt
